Wednesday Oct 6. The Verdict is in.

Nicu, the #3 mechanic did show up today. He appeared to be a little more knowledgeable than the previous one. He determined that the old Renault is toast. Not enough compression any longer and the oil was not getting pumped up through the top of the engine and was most likely the reason the rocker arm broke.

So I am shopping for a reconditioned engine or a new one. Right now there is little available in the former and I’ll be spending my children’s heritage.

  1. If you you are buying new you should look into the engines from Betamarine. They are manufactured in the UK using Kubota engines. I have the older Universal M20 which is also based on the Kubota and I love it. Other than the reliability of the engine the main advantage is that you can go to a tractor dealer and get parts for a fraction of what you would pay at a marine dealer.

Yes, I have considered it. But I think it will be a Sole Mini 17. Which is a Mitsubishi block and it fits my current mountings to a tee. The Beta Marine has a much narrower base. It is also about 1000 Euro more. Stay tuned.
